Container Gardening Carrots

I started with container gardening carrots as an experiment to traditional vegetable gardening. As expected it was easy enough to do and the results show a good result.

Carrots are only sown from seed and thinned out when young seedlings to prevent overcrowding. I planted them in a circular pattern about 5mm deep and covered them with fine sand. I then covered them with a layer of hessian.

I guess you can use whatever you have including news paper, paper towel. They just need a covering that you can keep moist until they begin to emerge. I used a small spray bottle to make sure that it remained damp.

Once they begin to emerge, the covering is removed and add a fine layer of mulch around them. They are very fragile and should not be bumped.

You have to be patient as they take some time to emerge and then seem to take forever to start growing. Once they do, they just take off.

It is a great vegetable to grow and reward you with a delicious tasting crunchy vegetable.

Feeding And Watering Your Carrots

The watering is easy as I used my DIY self-watering buckets. They have a sump with a small pipe used to fill it. It may only need to be done once a week depending on their size.

If you do decide to make your own self-watering containers, adjust the amount of water you need in the bottom by filling it to where you need it mark that and drill the overflow hole.

I used a premium potting mix for my container gardening carrots and this provides nutrients for a few weeks. I then used a liquid fertiliser made from seaweed mainly. This was applied every 2 weeks.

See the carrots below and you will notice how healthy they look.

I just love carrots especially when you grow your own. My research tells me that they are very nutritious and are an excellent addition to any salad

I prefer them raw as a stick to eat our homemade hummus or grated as part of a salad.
