How To Grow Turmeric In Pots

I bought a mulberry tree and got a bonus turmeric plant at an organic market day. I now had to learn how to grow turmeric in pots.

Mulberry and Turmeric

Here are the mulberry and turmeric plants that I bought at a local organic growers market. They were a good size and a bargain price.

They were healthy plants and just needed to be planted into pots or self-watering buckets.

I have not grown either one of these plants before, but willing to give it a go.

The Turmeric Plant Growing Well

Turmeric Plant

I was excited and looking forward to seeing some reward for my efforts. The information I gathered from the internet did tell me that it will take more than 6 months to harvest some tubers.

The potting mix had a few months of slow-release fertilizer. This was topped up with Seasol a liquid fertilizer made from seaweed as shown in a previous post.
Watering was simply adding water to the reservoir in the self-watering bucket

The new leaves are looking great and added some nice large fan-like leaves to the overall look of my range of potted plants. I can now add growing turmeric in pots to my list of achievements.

The Frosted Turmeric Plant

Look at this frosted turmeric plant. It tells me that it is time to dig it up and see how many tubers were formed.

The photo was taken at the beginning of July after some really big frosts. I wasn’t expecting too many tubers because there was only one plant.

Three plants may be right for this self-watering 5-gallon bucket

Harvesting The Turmeric Tubers

Now is the time to harvest the tubers. The first month of winter has passed and the frost has done its job and killed off the green growth.

I was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few tubers. None were particularly large but still a good outcome. I now have several tubers to plant out for next year and a few to flavoursome dishes.

Here is the proof that shows you how to grow turmeric in pots. I will make up some 13 gallons / 60-litre self-watering bins and see if I can increase the number of tubers for the harvest.

There did not seem to be any diseases or insect problems affecting my plant. Just feed and water and watch it grow.

Planting Tumeric For Next Season

During harvesting, I found some tubers were already sending up some new shoots.

This is how the cycle continues. These tubers will be planted in another prepared 5-gallon self-watering bucket. I’m hoping to get 4 or 5 of these planted for next season.

Enjoy Growing Plants For Food And Beauty

Trying different things in the garden is always fun and interesting. Greatly enjoyed growing turmeric and learned a lot even when this plant prefers a more tropical climate.

I will try growing ginger this year because I use more of it in smoothies. The sharp fresh bite gives more zing and lifts the flavours of the fruits I use in the smoothies/juices.

No matter where you live, just use up the space available and grow some food or flowers. Growing plants of any kind is one of the most enjoyable things to do. Happy gardening.

Very interesting but where do you get tubers from initially

Hi Rod, I bought the tubers from a local gardeners’ market. It was an experiment to see whether they would grow in my environment.
