Container Vegetable Gardening

Container vegetable gardening is very easy to get going. It can be done on a balcony, patio, indoors or in the garden. I have been trying this method for a few years and looking forward to showing you how i did it.

I made up some self-watering 5 gallon buckets to grow my vegetables. I watched some videos on this and came up with my own ideas about how to make it work.

The weather has been very hot and dry in recent years and it became necessary to find another way to grow vegetables. There have been water restrictions making it essential to find water saving methods .

It was necessary to use quality potting mix and add some slow release fertiliser and other nutrients.

Planting The Vegetables

Planting the seeds directly into the buckets has worked best for me. I did try planting into a tray with seedling mix, but had problems with wilt when transplanting.

I always plant a few extra seeds and select the plants with the most vigor.

The images show some very healthy vegetable seedlings. The plants at this stage only required watering about once a week, and that was just a top up.

The traditional vegetable would have required a lot more water as a lot is lost as it moves down into the soil profile and becomes unavailable to the plants.

What Vegetables Can I Grow In A Bucket?

I believe that you could grow any vegetable in a bucket. I was able to grow a range of different vegetables quite easily. The size of the container used seem to provide some very nice tasting veggies.

My experiment with container vegetable gardening expanded a bit and some large plastic garbage bins were converted into self-watering planters.
